Let’s talk about storage solutions . . . and we don’t mean a visit to that famous Swedish store.

It’s no secret we’re a nation of hoarders. We’ve all got too much ‘stuff’ – apparently six times more than the generation before us.

Our lofts are bulging with old toys, VHS tapes, clothes and back copies of The Beano. No wonder a whole industry has grown up around our hoarding habits with self-storage warehouses heaving with people’s junk . . . sorry, beloved items.

It’s no different in the IT industry. Whether liking something on Facebook, streaming a movie or posting on Instagram, every internet activity involves huge amounts of data that needs to be stored somewhere.

And with data creation increasing by 60% each year, the demand for storage specialists is growing fast.

As the many IT opportunities on s1jobs illustrate, the responsibility for data storage can come under the umbrella of a general IT role or be a more specific data manager, storage and backup engineer, and server administrator.

What is necessary for all these IT professionals is an understanding of storage options, architectures and how best to implement them.

Whether it’s cloud solutions, on-site or hybrid, storage pros are needed to manage data, ensure it’s secure and comply with the ever-growing raft of data regulations.

You can also have an impact on company profits and the planet. Specialists who are able to streamline equipment in data centres can reduce power requirements, meaning cost savings and improved green credentials.

One establishment that’s seen huge improvements to its IT is the University of Strathclyde, which recently introduced new infrastructure and cloud services. A system was introduced that can scale to students’ needs as the demand for storage continues to grow.

Already the volume of stored data at the university has increased from 14 terabytes to 280 terabytes with added advantages, such as enhanced performance and reliability.

Storage specialists need good network-based experience and often a technical background in testing or support. When it comes to soft skills, attention to detail and good communication on technical topics are a must.

One thing is certain, Big Data is not going to shrink anytime soon.

So, if you’re the sort of person who can find a good home for Great Aunt Agnes’s collection of Reader’s Digests, a future in storage is for you.
