If it’s true 60% of the jobs that will exist 10 years from now haven’t even been invented yet, primary school kids will have a tough time choosing a role from s1jobs in 2026.
Of course as new jobs arrive, old jobs go. We’ve said goodbye to lift operators and switchboard workers and it’s likely many more jobs will become extinct.
There are, however, industries that can be future-proofed and IT is one of them.
It’s a vast sector and is only going to get bigger.
So, whether you’re a graduate or have an interest in IT and want to change careers, there are great opportunities for new starters.
Here are our six of the best.
Tech sales
This is a great introduction to IT for those without formal qualifications.
As a salesperson you’ll be expected to know products inside out.
Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn more will go down well.
IT administrator or support technician
Here you could be assisting in implementation of new IT systems as well as day-to-day maintenance.
The great thing is career progression is often clearly mapped out, with the opportunity to progress to support engineer and eventually IT manager.
An IT qualification will get a foot in the door.
Junior IT support analyst
This is ideal if you enjoy troubleshooting and have good customer service skills, as it involves helping staff and customers deal with problems related to IT and software.
It’s a great entry-level role as it offers a good grounding and equips you with transferrable skills.
Junior software developer
You will focus on the development, maintenance, design and installation of computer systems.
Coding skills are in huge demand so it’s important to have a knowledge of computer languages.
Junior business analyst
Here you straddle the worlds of business and IT, working with a company’s IT team to gather information about the software and hardware necessary for the business to operate and identify what the best options are.
It’s a great role for a good problem solver and negotiator.
Junior network engineer
This is more technically demanding so chances are you’ll need some experience.
As the job involves setting up and fixing communication networks, it can be helpful if you can keep a cool head under pressure and think on your feet.
