In some quarters, Scotland and Software Development are not seen as synonymous: but those in the know will tell you there’s a definite techy trend developing.

IT 1 Become Part of Scotland’s Developing Future

It’s true we may not yet be in the league of Silicone Valley and big American businesses, but we’re not very far away.

In fact, like Charlie Flynn punching for Commonwealth Gold, Scotland’s IT industry is proving more than capable of fighting its corner in an increasingly competitive world – and it’s Software Development in particular that’s landing most points in the ring.

Take the case of software firm RED61 who developed the ticketing system for the Edinburgh fringe.

The company has overseen unprecedented growth since its inception in 2002, breaking into international markets, refining the Edinburgh Fringe software model and last year boasting a record revenue of £1 million.

Most recently, it secured £572,000 in funding as it continues to expand.

It’s easy to see why. Software is such an essential part of life now: you might say, coding brings in the coin. Lots of coins.

In fact, Digital and Information and Communication Technology brings in £4 billion GVA to Scotland’s economy.

The flip side (when it comes to coins, there’s always a flip side!) is a much publicized skills shortage.

Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, has pointed out Scotland needs an additional 11,000 new Digital and IT workers a year to meet current and future demand.

That’s good news for anyone looking to kickstart or further their career in ITC.

There’s ringside help too. Scotland’s first digital skills academy, Code Clan, has been set up to inspire and train the Software Developers of the future, with the academy drawing support from across the sector.

Following in the footsteps of software company Simul8 and the digital technologies trade body Scotland IS, Edinburgh-based recruitment firm Be-IT is the latest tech company to offer a scholarship at Code Clan.

It’s all geared to ensuring the most talented coders have the chance to prove themselves.

For all the challenges facing the Software Development sector in Scotland one thing is certain – there are hundreds of job opportunities available.

It’s just about finding the right role for you, whether you’re an advanced coder or just starting out.

Graduate salaries begin anywhere from £20,000 to £32,000 a year, with roles in IT Programming, Java Engineering and Software Development across a broad range of industries.

Established Software Developer and Engineer roles, meanwhile, take in on average around £40,000 a year. However, growing investment in the sector has led to competitive rates and opportunities for Development Managers, with salaries in Java and Software Development reaching up to £70,000.

In App and Mobile Development this can reach a mouth-watering £100,000.

With such attractive career opportunities, it won’t be long before Software Development ranks alongside single malts as one of Scotland’s most sought after exports.
