Okay so the geek reputation among IT pros is a little overhyped. But it’s impossible not to fall in love with the movie heroes who have made being a geek so super-cool!
So let’s see what lessons we can learn from them to boost our own careers in IT.
Weird Science
Much loved by teenage boys back in the day, this 1985 American sci-fi film featured top geeks Gary Wallace and Wyatt Donnelly.
The pair are inspired by the film Frankenstein to create a virtual girl using Wyatt’s computer. Following a freak electrical accident, Kelly Le Brock comes to life in front of their eyes and quickly sorts out their lives.
Lesson: dream big. Your knowledge and skills in IT are much needed so aim high and make your fantasy role become reality.
Iron Man
The ultimate superhero geek, Tony Stark’s love of tech and gadgets is surpassed only by a love of the millionaire playboy lifestyle.
Many have drawn parallels with real life tech gurus Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, and entrepreneur Elon Musk, both of whom make cameos in Iron Man 2.
Lesson: innovation reaps rewards. Technology never stands still so being inventive and tenacious are important skills to develop if you want to go far in IT.
Short Circuit
Johnny 5 is alive! That’s right, a military robot is struck by lightning that, obviously, leads to it developing human intelligence and emotions in this 1986 film. It’s a lightweight romp but Steve Guttenberg, who plays a military scientist, and the robot Johnny become charming heroes.
Lesson: charm always works. Don’t dismiss the importance of interpersonal skills, even in the Knowledge is King world of tech.
WarGames
Before Matthew Broderick became Mr Jessica Parker he was whipping up his fanbase with this cult classic. He plays a whizzkid who manages to crack the code of a military supercomputer. He thinks he’s playing a computer game. He’s actually unleashing nuclear warheads and has to move fast to stop World War III.
Lesson: use your powers for good not evil. What about a job in virtual security? It’s big business nowadays.
The Matrix
Hacker extraordinaire Neo saves the world with his handy keyboard skills and manipulation of ‘the system’. Like, totally awesome dude. Oops, sorry, wrong Keanu Reeves film franchise.
Lesson: virtual reality is becoming less Sci-Fi and more Sci and it will support more jobs as the technology develops. Can you see yourself working in VR? You’ll never look back.
