HR 21 Interview advice: be the top dog without barking

You perused s1jobs for the very best IT roles, everything from Software Developer to Business Analyst.

You applied for your dream position.

You scored an interview. Get in there!

But now it’s crunch time: those few short minutes that can feel like long hours that can add up to many years in a rewarding new career.

So here are some top tips that will save you from interview disaster and help steer you to success.

Date decorum

This is a first date and so it will pay to dress up for the occasion.

Yes, that means ironing your shirt. Yes, you may need to borrow an iron.

Occasional first date silences can be excruciating. Don’t be tempted to fill them with: Do people ever tell you you look like that bald bloke off EastEnders?

Instead go in pre-armed with space fillers: Your offices are very modern for this part of the city or if at any point you’d like me to explain my answer, please just ask.

Sharp focus

It may be tempting to take a pre-arranged call on your mobile and say: I’m sorry Sir Malcolm, I’m in a meeting for that Database Manager gig, so I’ll call you at the club (while winking at your interviewer).

Everything should be switched off except your game head – and your focus should be on one thing: the person in front of you and what they are saying.

Knowns and unknowns

Not every question is a test. Asked how was your journey to the interview, don’t critique the bus driver and offer better routes.

The flip side is knowing your stuff when it comes to the company.

Research its history. Find out as much as you can about who will be interviewing you, even using social media.

Don’t, however, stalk your new Project Manager on Facebook then freak her out by telling her how cute her Shih-Tzu is.

Kanye no do that!

It’s the thinnest of lines between being confident and Kanye West. So there’s no need to kiss your fist after answering each question and saying ‘nailed it’.

Asked where you see yourself in a year’s time, don’t tip the MD out of his chair and put your feet up on her desk.

Instead be composed and polite: to do this, simply picture yourself as Richard Gere or Angelina Jolie in an informal audience with the Dalai Lama.

Be attentive too, steering the conversation, when appropriate, to those qualities you know fit the role: experience of writing and implementing IT procedures or leading test strategies.
